I think my xanga needs a defibrillator. Two and a half months of abandonment...it's flatlining. It's time boys and girls, once again, for an update. Zing!
School is going well so far. It's too bad that none of my classes are really interesting though. I think the best one might be statistics, if that says anything. Right now I'm taking:
- Government 201 - American National Government
- Philosophy 321 - Computer Ethics
- Geology 120 - Geology of the Southeast
- Math 202 - Elementary Statistics II
- Comp Sci 300 - Algorithms & Data Structures in Java
I like my Ethics professor...I guess that class is pretty interesting, but it really has nothing to do with computers as the title states. It's more about what is moral? What distinguishes right from wrong? Why is one person wrong when he/she thinks they are right (or vice versa)? We get into some interesting debates, but I come out of there very confused sometimes on what I even think.
Government I have on MWF at 8:00am. There isn't an ounce of me that is interested in politics (or history) and to have to focus on that at 8:00am is brutal. Granted, my late night walks seem to keep me from making it to that class on those days, but I'm pretty ok with that.
Geology seems like it could be interesting, but maybe with a different instructor. It's very boring in there, and lately I've been fighting to keep my eyes open. I have a paper to write today for that class. I hope I'll remember. I'll make another "Biff" for it.
Computer Science is a lot more difficult this time around. Learning about singly and doubly linked lists, abstract data types, recursion...we didn't touch really at all on any of this in the first java class, and so it's taken a lot to adapt to this one. Not to mention we have a Chinese (I'm assuming, not sure of actual nationality) professor who is a little difficult to communicate with. Made a 110 on my first program though, and am going to turn in my second one in a few hours. It works, and I should make a 100 on it too. Thank goodness for a flexible work schedule and compsci tutors in the math lab!!
Statistics, or "man math", as the baber likes to call it, is going well. Did really well on my first test (96) providing i forgot my calculator. That was also the day I received my first parking citation at school. I was running late so I decided to drive to class and take my chances in the commuter lot. My logic: "Class is only 50 mins...I'll be in and out." Conclusion: Logic failed. I was tagged with a $15 parking ticket which has now increased to $17 because I didn't pay it within 3 days. I guess I should read the back of those a little more carefully.
Everything else with school is so great though. Living on campus is so much fun! I have excellent roommates and friends around here to hang out with. We have movie nights, volleyball games, chocolate chip pancake cookin' nights...it's truely a blast! Monday nights at CRU have been awesome...been able to connect to a few really cool freshmen guys there. Wednesday nights we have a group of about 12 (give or take) come over for Pillar Groups (mens bible study), and let me tell you, these guys are awesome! Rock solid in the Word, contributing greatly to our discussions and really digging deep into our passages to better understand it. And on a more personal note, accountability has been incredible, and I encourage each one of you reading this to find some. Prayer really does change things, and what better way to do it than pacting together with a close friend or two in prayer for each other. Be open. Be honest. Be you. It is then, in your vulnerability, that God will do great works in your life.
Intramural softball has started this semester, even though it is a spring time sport. I've joined forces with a team called "The Warriors", but I only know of 3 or 4 of us who are really on the team. We've had quite the diversity of team members in the first four games of our season. We just pick up a man or woman here or there when we need extra players. So far we're 3-1...our latest win being the responsibility of Joanna who hit in the game winning RBI with a single in the bottom half of the last inning (she's also one of those who just happened to be playing with us that day, but isn't really "on our team"). "Kujos" to you anyway! Right now I'm playing shortstop and am 9 for 13 batting (.692 avg.) with 3 doubles, 6 singles, and a walk. Next game is today at 4:30. Stop by and watch (or play) if you can! *Edit*: Game today is cancelled due to rain. It was our last game of the season, and no make up games will be scheduled. Final record: 3-1. Go team...go team go!
Is anyone else completely "heels-over-head" about this cold weather that's coming? My late night brisk walks have been so nice lately. I should probably start liking football more, so I can have a reason to go out in the cold by watching a game or two. Speaking of sports...this marks the first time in 11 years...the first time since I've become a fan of baseball and the Atlanta Braves, that I'm not watching them in October. October means playoffs, and this is the first time in 11 years that they didn't earn a spot. It's an empty feeling. The season feels incomplete. There's no shower of champagne, no "2006" NL division title banner to hang up next to the last 14, nothing. Just plans and a hope for 2007 with the return of a [hopefully] stellar and healthy Mike Hampton to the pitching rotation. The bullpen seemed to be solidified somewhat towards the last part of the season. Just need a reliable and speedy leadoff hitter, a possible replacement [Pete Orr?] for a possibly departing Marcus Giles at second base, and solid outings that our starting pitchers are well capable of providing. Here's hoping I'll visit my second World Series in 2007.
Saw Needtobreathe last friday with Clay and KatieK, and man they continue to amaze me with each show. I'm positive that I can say now with complete assurance that they are my favorite band. Sure, I really like many others, but if I had to pick one and only one, it's going to have to be them. They played at Erskine College in Due West, SC. It's a long drive, but I love going out there. It's such a beautiful campus. It was also outdoors in the cool October air and it felt great! If you guys are reading this...need any roadies? I'll tag along!
On a more personal note, there are a couple of things on my heart that I'm facing right now, and no direction as of yet for what to do with them. As Solomon asked for wisdom, God, so do I.
Time to nestle into bed.
Psalm 139:23-24
Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; See
if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.
